Hakeem was better because…
He had worse teammates
It’s very important to note that Hakeem never played on teams that were as talented as Shaq did throughout his career. Could you actually name 2 of his teammates from the 1986 Rockets team that made the Finals? Could you name 3 or 4 teammates from his 1994-1995 Rockets teams? The average fan couldn’t.
Meanwhile, Shaq was blessed with talented players everywhere he played.
Orlando: Penny Hardaway
Lakers: Kobe Bryant, Dennis Rodman, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Glen Rice, Mitch Richmond (way past prime)
Miami: Dwyane Wade, Antoine Walker (past prime), Gary Payton (way past prime)
Suns: Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Shawn Marion, Grant Hill (past prime)
Cavaliers: LeBron James
Celtics: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo
I mean seriously… who HASN’T Shaq played with?
On Hakeem’s championship teams, his best teammates were: Clyde Drexler, Kenny Smith, Otis Thorpe, Robert Horry, Sam Cassell. And let’s not dismiss that Drexler was past his prime when he played with Hakeem in Houston.
And yes, I realize Hakeem got Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen to join him in Houston for like 2 seasons, but by then, Hakeem was washed up.
It still does not compare to Shaq’s amazing teams.
